We found our way up a couple mountains ended up at the top of a couple ski resorts and made our way to donner lake. When we went back to our truck we were greeted by 2 sherrifs trying to tow my truck and give us tickets. They drove back to the main road to escort the tow truck in and we loaded up and split. WHAT HAPPEND TO THE OPEN AREAS TO RIDE? I NEED TO MOVE TO ALASKA OR WYOMING OR SOMETHIN. Ronny was moving up from a CRF 150 but had some experience on the CRF 230 and a Yamaha YZ 125. This was to be a big step in his riding career and one not to be taken to lightly. After a trip to Soldotna to load the new bike it was off to the track to see if all the hoopla about this bike was fact or fiction. The first hour was spent in a break in period and getting use to the feel of this bike. Everything was going exceptionally well with 75 degrees on the mercury, the track totally to the two lone riders, and yes, Craig was there on the 450X to play and just get really dirty.

Now was the time to see what this bad boy had to offer. Smoothness is a trait of four strokes that we have begun to expect and the CRF250R scores a perfect 10 in this category. Roll on power is as smooth as you could ever hope for with no apparent flat spots and a very wide power band making riding this bike a real pleasure. On the track the twin piped 2006 Honda CRF250R is light and blazingly quick. Each rider agreed that the bike was super on the jumps and in the rough but the turns was where it really showed a noticeable difference. The 450 would accelerate away in the straight stretches as expected but the 250 would close the gap in each and every turn on the track. But unfortunately all good things come to a close and on one turn that exits in a set of doubles, the 250 attempted to go ballistic on a trajectory seemingly pointed at Pluto. Momentum slowed and the forces of gravity prevailed planting the bike to a rest upside down in the dirt and the rider motionless along the track.

Arrival at the Soldotna Hospital,
May 24, 2006, Approximately 1800 Hours.

Taking some time out for x-rays, some legal drugs, and a call to Mom, that last one really hurts, it was evident that the days ride had as suddenly as it started, come to a halt and was quickly being replaced by a painful yet boring night in the good old Soldotna Hospital. Thank goodness they now have cable TV in the rooms. What we seem to be looking at is 6 broken bones in the right foot. The bike faired out better then the rider and is ready to be ridden once the mending process is complete. The CRF230 was my introduction into the fantastically exciting world of MX riding. It’s hard to believe that just 2 short years ago we purchased a pair of Honda’s, the 230 and a 150. It all started so innocently, just a way to blow off some steam and get outside and have some fun. Next thing we knew it was off to the track and time to learn to fly.

Sure enough, the CRF 230 had some wings, in fact it was the perfect bike to start riding on as it’s not overwhelming, very easy to control, excellent for a practice day at the track and really shines on the trails around our home here in Kenai, Alaska. Ok, ok, so most people do ride dogsleds around here, sorry I can’t stand the scenery.

Review of the Honda CRF230.

So here is my honest observation from owning one of these mid-sized Honda's and some of the things I like about it and some that I dislike about the bike.

First off, the 230 are sized for a smaller rider and a perfect fit when I was a young 14-year-old of 5’8”. I found the bike easy to ride, very stable and light to the feel. Confidence in riding was nearly immediate, as this bike is very easy to ride. Power rolls on in a very linear curve building steadily through the powerband. Never did you feel out of control unless you just nailed the throttle while in a lower gear. The bike will wheelie with a good twist of the grip and powering up hills and through the sand never was a real problem. Yes, more power was always wanted especially after the first season but all in all it’s a great play bike that still deserves a home in our garage.

Catching some air time on the CRF230 on the track in Kenai Alaska.
Specs http://www.hondacrf450.net/article.php/20060428115958287 http://www.hondacrf450.net/article.php/20060428115958287 Fri, 28 Apr 2006 13:59:58 -0600 http://www.hondacrf450.net/article.php/20060428115958287#comments Honda CRF 450X
From the Honda Owners Manual

Specs on the Greatest Motorcross Bike on the planet. That counts for so very much more then we can tell you. It's knowing that there willing to assist in more then just a sale of a bike that keeps us coming back. So we ride Honda primarily for the dealer as we really mean it when we say there is no bad bike, (That Runs). There are many factors that go into motocross riding and the brand of bike is just one of them. It comes down to this, if it puts a smile on the riders face, that’s a good ride. I have to remind my Dad of this from time to time as he still thinks his Hodaka Combat Wombat is the baddest ride on two wheels. Sorry Dad.
