2006 Honda CRF 250R

Honda Four Stroke CRFWell today my sons friend and riding partner picked up his new 2006 Honda CRF 250R twin piped rocket from Rons Honda in Soldotna Alaska as a congratulations from his parents for an outstanding Junior year at Kenai Central High School. Ronny was moving up from a CRF 150 but had some experience on the CRF 230 and a Yamaha YZ 125. This was to be a big step in his riding career and one not to be taken to lightly. After a trip to Soldotna to load the new bike it was off to the track to see if all the hoopla about this bike was fact or fiction. Read on to see our review of the first ride on the CRF 250R.

Arrival at the KPRL motocross track, Kenai Alaska.
May 24, 2006 Approximately 1500 hours!

Time to unload this bike and start a brisk break-in before thrashing it abit. The first hour was spent in a break in period and getting use to the feel of this bike. Everything was going exceptionally well with 75 degrees on the mercury, the track totally to the two lone riders, and yes, Craig was there on the 450X to play and just get really dirty.

Now was the time to see what this bad boy had to offer. Smoothness is a trait of four strokes that we have begun to expect and the CRF250R scores a perfect 10 in this category. Roll on power is as smooth as you could ever hope for with no apparent flat spots and a very wide power band making riding this bike a real pleasure. On the track the twin piped 2006 Honda CRF250R is light and blazingly quick. Each rider agreed that the bike was super on the jumps and in the rough but the turns was where it really showed a noticeable difference. The 450 would accelerate away in the straight stretches as expected but the 250 would close the gap in each and every turn on the track. But unfortunately all good things come to a close and on one turn that exits in a set of doubles, the 250 attempted to go ballistic on a trajectory seemingly pointed at Pluto. Momentum slowed and the forces of gravity prevailed planting the bike to a rest upside down in the dirt and the rider motionless along the track.

Arrival at the Soldotna Hospital,
May 24, 2006, Approximately 1800 Hours.

Taking some time out for x-rays, some legal drugs, and a call to Mom, that last one really hurts, it was evident that the days ride had as suddenly as it started, come to a halt and was quickly being replaced by a painful yet boring night in the good old Soldotna Hospital. Thank goodness they now have cable TV in the rooms. What we seem to be looking at is 6 broken bones in the right foot. The bike faired out better then the rider and is ready to be ridden once the mending process is complete. Well, more later as this story continues to unfold.

Update on the "My 250 Kicked My #%&" - May 26, 2006.

Ronny's home, cast and all, Still thinks that it was an act of god and not just to much bike. Hopefully we can get him to log in and tell us his side of the story. Hey Ronny, What did happen in that last jump? Happy to have you back home.

Reminder - Always wear your safety gear when riding. Helmets, Chest Protectors, a good set of MX Boots, Gloves and padding. The photo to the left is after 45 minutes of bringing home the Honda CRF 230. Yup, the final score on that day was Honda 1 Rider 0. No chest protector and one broken collarbone later. Wear that gear and ride longer and harder.
P.S. If your name is Ronny, add in a suit of armor just to be on the safe side.
